Josh Hutcherson talks The Hunger Games

Total Film recently caught up with Josh Hutcherson, and, unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for talk to turn towards The Hunger Games.

Hutcherson, thus far best known for turns in Bridge To Terabithia, Journey To The Center Of The Earth and The Kids Are All Right, plays Peeta in the upcoming adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ wildly successful novel.

Peeta is one half of District 12’s effort in the fight-to-the-death tournament, with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) being the other. Though, judging by what Hutcherson told us, the movie’s audition process sounds almost as gruelling as the games themselves:

“Mentally it was tough because I’d never connected with a character more than I did with Peeta. I felt he was so much like who I am as a person that I was like, “If I don’t get it, I won’t understand.” It drove me crazy.”

And then there’s perhaps an even scarier prospect to contend with: will he be ready if THG does become the next Twilight?

“I’m terrified of what my life could become. As an actor, everyone hopes one day to be that well known but at the same time to be thrust into it instantaneously is overwhelming.

“If it does happen, I’ll be grateful and terrified at the same time.”

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island opens on 3 February 2012, with The Hunger Games following on 23 March 2012.

Josh Hutcherson Says Fans Will Be "Really Happy" With The Hunger Games Film

Josh Hutcherson is in Australia promoting his new film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and when we chatted to him we just had to squeeze in a question about The Hunger Games.

We asked Josh to tell us a bit about The Hunger Games, because we are desperate to find out more about it! And he told us that fans will definitely like what they see.

"We stayed very true to the book, Suzanne Collins was involved in the whole process so we're giving the fans what they want, and I think they'll be really happy with it. I haven't seen the whole movie yet, but I've seen a good portion of it. It's really really good. I like it," Josh told

And we wanted to know who would win in a battle between Sean from Journey 2 and Peeta from The Hunger Games.

"Oh Peeta for sure. 'Cos Sean in comparison to Peeta, he can't stand up. Peeta's been fighting for his life since day one. Peeta would win for sure," Josh said.

Check out all the action from the Journey 2 premiere below!

Josh Hutcherson + Vanessa Hudgens Interview
As part of the promotion for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, (my review is here) I was afforded 10 minutes to interview the young stars of the film Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson.

It should be noted that in between the interviews of other journalists/bloggers, Vanessa would break into singing , and a very brief snippet of this was captured in my interview and is played at the start.

The film premiered at Melbourne, Australia on January 15 2012. This interview was conducted on January 16 2012.

First Review of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

The good thing about this film, is that the action begins straight away.

Thankfully, the exposition at the start is minimal, yet still important, and before you know it, we are off on the journey to the Mysterious Island.
Infact there are a lot of things worth seeing about this film.

Although containing the star power of Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson , it is Luis Guzman who steals the scene as the money-hungry pilot, who has all the great one-liners and sight gags of the film.

Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) is on the search for his grandfather, believed to be missing on a mythical island. His step-father, Hank Parsons (Dwayne Johnson) sees this as an opportunity to try and connect more with his step-son, who is rebellious and resistant to Hank's parental style.

Hutcherson holds his own in several scenes where Dwayne Johnson's character borders on daffiness. We know he is a strong actor, as attested to in 'The Kids Are All Right' and he shows he can play the straight man to several comedic characters quite well.

Vanessa Hudgens's character occassionally seemed to be forgotten in the screenplay, yet a 'love-interest' component , plus a nice Indiana Jones homage shows that she can deliver clever convincing performances in an action film.

Michael Caine somehow manages, amongst the zaniness of the film, to bring a sense of melancholy to his role as the wise exploring Grandfather, and portrays a genuine warmth with the role.

Journey 2 is a perfect mix of humour and action - and fills its 90 minute running time with clever sight gags and quite exceptional special effects. Invasions with large island creatures seem convincing enough, panaromic shots and historical artefacts believable.

It is only when we encounter a scene involving bees that it diverts into silliness and feels like a veiled attempt at a homage to a Star Wars fight scene.
The potential confrontation with giant spiders is also, disappointly, unfulfilled.

But Journey 2 delivers a flashy and eye opening adventure product, with each cast member stepping forward to steal particular scenes. Occassionally even, there are some scary moment, and younger audience goers may feel at times a little frightened of both image and sound.

It is worth noting the screening I was at, was the 'World Premiere' held in Melbourne , Australia on January 15 2012.

The screening, scheduled for 4pm, began 1 hour and 15 minutes late, due to both Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson signing autographs on the red carpet.

For those in the cinema, it was a disappointing experience, but that must be balanced out knowing that a significant number of people (several hundred) were given ample opportunity to meet and greet the stars of the film on the red carpet.

Both Hudgens and Hutcherson sat through the entire film, which is a credit to them. Often, special guests don't watch their own screenings and leave after a few words to the crowd.

They stayed and genuinely seemed to enjoy the surroundings and 3D aspect of their film.

Josh Hutcherson Talks Fear, His Shyness and How to Win His Heart
Celebuzz has posted part 2 of their interview with Josh! Check it out below! :)

With The Hunger Games a little bit more than two months from its big release on March 23, Celebuzz has been bringing all sorts of HG goodness your way with our 100 Days of Hunger Games campaign and we’ve got some more from our exclusive with Josh Hutcherson (aka Peeta) for you!

In our first interview with Josh, we talked about his thoughts on the getting the huge role and the movie, but this time we wanted to go deeper and get to know Josh on a personal level. What’s the key to his heart if you’re a lady who’s Team Peeta? What’s his biggest fear? We covered it all, and there’s one sports surprise that you’ll be shocked to know (Hint: Josh apparently has some serious 3-point skills).

Check out the video above, and here’s some choice quotes from our chat with Josh:

On His Biggest Fear: I don’t like spiders. Not to be cliche, I’m not afraid of much … I pride myself on that, but spiders I just don’t like. I feel like even if I’m three feet away I’m afraid they’re somehow going to get to me really quickly … and then they’re going to attack me, crawl in my nose. I’m terrified of it.

Is He Shy or Forward? If I’m meeting somebody for the first time, I can be a little shy at first but then when I know that I feel something about somebody, I’m all about talking about it. That’s one of the most important things being up front and forthcoming.

What’s the Key to Winning His Heart? For me it’s all about being true to yourself and being real. I think if a girl tries to be something she’s not to try to make you think otherwise of her, then that’s just unattractive. I’d much rather be with somebody that’s naturally who they are.

Is He Ready for the Peeta-Katniss Pressure Between Him and Jennifer Lawrence: I don’t know how you can be prepared for that kind of thing. People are always going to infer and draw their opinions. I’m ready for people’s opinions, that’s for sure.

His Basketball Past: My basketball team was the Beverly Hills high school recreational league champions. We were the most unlikely team of like no taller than 6 foot tall white guys in this league where there’s tons of 6’10 ex-NBA players that played for the Nets, the Bulls legit basketball players! And we won I don’t know how still, but we did.

Is He a Baker Like Peeta? I’m more of a grill master. Being from Kentucky, the barbeque is more up my alley.

Josh Hutcherson Interview with Seventeen (South Africa) Preview

Omg! We were lucky enough to score an exclusive interview with the hunky stars of The Hunger Games!

Yummy Josh Hutcherson says he had to do training to portray the role of Peeta. “I had to put on weight for the role, which was the biggest thing. I had to build up 15 pounds of muscle and that was done through working out a bunch and eating a lot of chicken and eggs and it was very tiring.” Well Josh, the training definitely paid off!

Josh also adds that the movie is about more than just fighting and violence. “The story is really about survival and it’s about family and a tribute to freedom.

Be sure to watch out for the April issue of seventeen for the full interview with Liam and Josh.

Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson Talks Readying for Sequel

Hunger Games fans, rejoice! The highly anticipated film hasn't even come out yet, and things are already looking good for the flick's sequel Catching Fire.

"They want to wait and see how this comes out and does and how much fans like it, and then hopefully we're going to start on the next one next fall," Josh Hutcherson told us at the People's Choice Awards in L.A.

But are Hutcherson's Hunger Games costars Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth on board for another flick?

"Oh, for sure," he said. "What I've seen of the first one I'm in love with, so I'm on board for however many they want to make."

Hutcherson says he hasn't seen the final cut of the flick. "I've seen little bits," he dished.

So does Hutcherson think Hunger Games has what it takes to be a bigger box office hit than Twilight?

"I don't know," he laughed. "Twilight is huge, man, and has a lot of fans. We'll see... It's an entirely different world and also we're about surviving the games and family and loyalty."

"I was never really a Twilight fanatic so I don't really know that firsthand, but I think people are really passionate about it," Hunger Games' Leven Rambin told us. "People keep reminding me it's the most anticipated movie of the year. It's so exciting for me."
